This first-ever variegated form of Carex trifida is named 'Rekohu Sunrise' in reference to where it was found - Chatham Island, also known as Rekohu by the Moriori people who made this remote South Pacific island their home around 900 years ago. Rekohu means 'misty rain', for the island is often covered in low cloud and misty conditions. Carex 'Rekohu Sunrise' forms a large fountain-shaped, evergreen clump of broad leaves with wide golden margins. Chestnut coloured flower spikes appear in spring to early summer and persist well into autumn. Being a sedge, 'Rekohu Sunrise' revels in damp soil, but is tolerant of a wide range of conditions, including extreme coastal locations and bitterly cold winds. Full sun is preferable. Carex 'Rekohu Sunrise' is ideal for mass planting on exposed coastal sites or wetland areas, adding colour highlights to garden borders or a bold splash of colour to a mixed container planting.
