Moa's Toes
PSEUDOPANAX
X HYBRIDA
Highly textural, shiny, evergreen, leathery leaves are a lush deep green to purple colour and resemble the toes of the now extinct Moa - a giant, flightless bird, indigenous to New Zealand, which stood 3m tall - higher than this plant! Leaf colour darkens with exposure to both sun and the cooler temperatures of the winter season.
Moa's Toes makes an excellent addition to a garden border as a background filler, or rhythmically planted throughout the border, where it will impart its handsome looks year-round. It also makes a tough, but spectacular container plant.
Grows best in full sun to part shade in a rich, moist, but well drained soil. The thick nature of the leaves mean Pseudopanax Moa's Toes is tolerant of wind, drought and coastal conditions. As with all Pseudopanax, maintenance is simple and confined to watering and feeding as required. Evergreen.
